12 ordinary people – randomly selected – what will they say?

The first Wisdom Council in Canada is about to meet in Victoria

Victoria, March 22, 2007 – Five hundred citizens of Victoria recently received written invitations to join the first Wisdom Council in Victoria… and in Canada. These people were randomly selected from the telephone book by a group of local volunteers from Wise Democracy Victoria.

Twelve people will be serving on the first Wisdom Council, and will gather for a day and a half of facilitated dialogue on whatever issues they deem important.

“This is an historic first in Canada. Democracy is about power from the people. The Wisdom Council is a genuine form of democracy, designed to access the wisdom of ordinary people. No one tells Wisdom Councillors what to talk about – a rare event these days!” said George Sranko Victoria resident and one of the founders of Wise Democracy Victoria. “We’re all very excited to hear what they have to say when they report to the people of Victoria on Saturday, March 31st at 4:00 pm.”

Everyone is invited to attend and listen to the Wisdom Council as they report to the people of Victoria. Please include this notice in your calendars, meeting notices, etc.

When: Public meeting will take place Saturday March 31st, from 4:00- 5:30 pm
Location: Fairfield (New Horizons) Activity Centre, 380 Cook Street.

Available for interview: Wisdom Council members and conveners at 5:30 pm and by telephone afterwards.

This will be an interactive public forum and all are encouraged to attend. A large number of community leaders have been invited, including all the mayors and councillors in Greater Victoria, as well as MPs, and MLAs. Television cameras and members of the press are expected.

This process will be repeated about three times a year, with 12 new council members randomly selected each time.
