Wisdom Council Convenors Meeting April 28/07

The ‘We Need You’ Council” commented Brigitte. “Democracy Needs You,” said Jan.
1) Update from Dan confirmed dates for Next Wisdom Council – June 22-23
2)Decision on Target Community – Victoria. We discussed this for over an hour; agreeing we wanted to make the decision based ona set of principles. The concerns included not wanting to spread ourselves too far and thin, having continuity for comparison between WCs, getting the word out more effectively to the media (TV), getting into City Hall for the community meeting, following our Toolkit recommendations on a series of WCs in the same target community, and freeing up energy to be more inclusive of youth, homeless people and immigrants. A show of hands showed a strong majority in support of continuing with the same target group as WC #1 – Victoria Municipality.
3) Search for Venue: Anke lead person, Robert assisting. One idea is to have the Wisdom Council meet at 1831 Fern St for Friday night and Saturday, and then move to a larger venue for the Community Meeting. Some ideas: Blanshard Community Centre, Fairfield New Horizons, City Hall (not available June 22-23). Raises some logistical issues around transporting WC members to the larger venue in time for the public meeting. The search continues for an appropriate location... if you have any ideas, please contact Anke (anke88 "at" shaw.ca)
4)Spreading the Ripple Committee: Diane, Robert, Brigitte, Gillian (and Increasing Representation)
5) Random Selection: Wendy (not present) and group
6) * Needed: Lead person & support people for Media; andLead personand support people for Mail-out and Calling. Thank you to the five people who volunteered to call so far - Anke, Diane, Robert, Brigitte?…
7) If you can’t make a meeting, please email or call someone to say you’re still interested and pass on any ideas you have. Thanks for this idea, Colin.
Next Meeting: Saturday, May 5th, 10 am – 12:30 pm, 1831 Fern Street. Please attend if possible.
The more the merrier when it comes to revitalizing our Democracy!
(Apparently the VIPIRG event at UVic was well attended and Wise Democracy Victoria was represented by Wendy, Colin, Sonya and Caspar in various capacities)

- Will make of list of groups and community centres to be visited
- Need poster to put up – George to prepare draft
- Need sign up list?

- One idea to save time and do the selection for both June and October Wisdom Councils at the same time – need to check with Wendy
- This would allow us to give invitees a choice of dates
- We decided to include the names of those invited to WC#1 (who are interested) to be part of the draw for WC #2, as promised to one or two keenly interested individuals
- How do we include youth and homeless? We need better representation on our group of Convenors. Lets individually invite youth, First Nations, and people of diverse cultures.
